Toyota Australia has upgraded its top-selling large SUV, the Kluger, to include autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as standard across the range.
AEB is part of a new suite of safety technologies previously fitted exclusively to the top-shelf Grande variant and now to every 2018 Kluger, including the entry-level GX and mid-range GXL.
The package also includes lane departure alert (but not assist), active cruise control, automatic high beam and pre-collision safety.
The catch is pricing has increased, by $950 for the base GX front-wheel drive GX (now $44,500 plus on-road costs), and by $1400 for the GXL 2WD – now $54,950 plus ORCs.
However, GXL buyers now also receive rain-sensing wipers, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Kluger Grande pricing is unchanged and all-wheel drive models continue to cost $4000 extra
The 2018 Kluger is the third Toyota SUV to receive the safety package in recent months, following RAV4 in October and Prado in November.
The Prado is Australia's best-selling large SUV with 15,982 registrations last year (up 8.5 per cent) followed by the Kluger with 12,509 sales -- up 5.4 per cent.
The RAV4, meantime, was Australia’s third most popular mid-size SUV last year, behind the Mazda CX-5 and Hyundai Tucson. It had its fifth consecutive year of record sales, topping 20,000 for the first time with a full-year total of 21,077 sales -- up 7.9 per cent.
The 2018 Kluger update arrives less than a year after a major midlife upgrade for Toyota’s seven-seat crossover, which brought fresh styling and increased performance, efficiency and equipment levels.
There are no changes to the Kluger’s 218kW/350Nm 3.5-litre petrol V6 or eight-speed automatic transmission, which together consume between 9.1L/100km (GX/GXL 2WD) and 9.5L/100km (AWD models).
2018 Toyota Kluger pricing (plus (PRCs):
GX 2WD -- $44,500 (+$950)
GXL 2WD -- $54,950 (+$1400)
Grande 2WD -- $65,646 (unchanged)
GX AWD -- $48,500 (+$950)
GXL AWD -- $58,950 (+$1400)
Grande AWD -- $69,617 (unchanged)
