Subaru proposes a radical new take on its BRZ boxer coupe – the Cross Sport shooting brakeSubaru has revealed a design proposal for a BRZ wagon at today’s Tokyo motor show, in the shape of the Cross Sport Design Concept.
Although it played second fiddle to the Levorg sports wagon , which is similar in concept, Subaru insiders told motoring.com.au the Cross Sport hints at a shooting brake version of the BRZ.
Few technical details of the Cross Sport have been revealed, but the two-door wagon is rear-wheel drive, features two large outboard exhaust outlets and is believed to be based on the BRZ platform.
However, unlike the BRZ, the twin brother of the Toyota 86, the larger Japanese brand had no involvement in the development of the Cross Sport, which at 4300mm long is 60mm longer than the BRZ.
Conversely, Subaru says it has no plans to offer a convertible version of its BRZ based on the Toyota FT-86 Open concept, which made another appearance in Tokyo.
A Subaru source told motoring.com.au the Cross Sport was a design study to test public reaction to a potential shooting brake version of the BRZ.
“This is a pure concept. It’s there to gauge interest. It’s a traditional concept car to get feedback.
“We can’t continue to produce just three-box sedans. We’ve got to continue to explore options.
“BRZ was a joint collaboration, but they’re the sorts of things we’ve got to keep doing to push the envelope and explore new ground.
“I don’t think Toyota even knew about it.”
