Lexus has pulled the covers off a new self-driving version of the LS sedan.
Breaking cover as one of very few surprises at the Tokyo motor show this morning, the LS+ Concept is said to adopt ‘Highway Teammate’ technologies which allows it to drive itself on designated highways.
“As a vision for the near future, the LS+ Concept fully automates nearly all driving operations in these conditions, including merging into highway traffic, lane keeping, speed adjustments, lane changes, overtaking and maintaining vehicle-to-vehicle distance,” Lexus says.

While strictly a concept at this point, the LS+ debuts upcoming production technologies including artificial intelligence. Lexus has slated a 2020 rollout of AI in some of its models.
“The Lexus ‘Highway Teammate’ philosophy aims to improve highway safety, reduce driver fatigue and lower the amount of traffic congestion through appropriate recognition, judgment and operation by on-board systems in response to traffic conditions,” the car maker says.

“The company’s ultimate aim is to eliminate traffic casualties so that all people can enjoy safe and smooth mobility and the fun of driving.”
The LS+ Concept combines self-driving technologies with a new styling language said to preview the next generation LS sedan. Measuring longer, wider and lower than the LS 500 production car, the concept features Lexus’ spindle grille with individual holes which open and close to improve cooling and aerodynamic properties.
Typical concept flourishes are correct and present, including laser-lit headlamps and rear combination lamps, and electronic side mirrors.
