There's a lighter, faster, more agile Tesla Model S hitting the market soon, and it's developed with racing in mind. Namely, the Electric GT or EGT series.
The Tesla Model S EGT P100D has shed a whopping 500kg, taking the P100D's estimated weight of around 2230kg to a Holden Commodore-like 1730kg. That alone will improve its acceleration, cornering grip and braking, and the car's 567kW electric motor will ensure rapid acceleration and decent top speeds too.
Fitted with slick Pirelli racing tyres and aerodynamic aids such as large rear wings, the Tesla Model S EGT P100D has been developed for teams interested in going racing with their electric cars, for which the Electric GT series was designed.
Racing brakes are added, as is new suspension, and the result is expected to deliver extreme speed, while the 100kWh battery should be enough for a flat-stick 60km race.
The Electric GT race series is open to any electric vehicle but organisers have stipulated "the Tesla Model S [has been] chosen for the first season, which will get underway in 2017" after teams and drivers opted for no other cars.
Electric supercar company Rimac may be disappointed.

In total, there will 10 teams and 20 drivers who will dice it out over seven races in the first season of the Electric GT race series, which was announced in March 2016. Races will comprise 20-minute practice sessions, followed by 60 minutes of qualifying and two races, of 60km each, one daytime, one at dusk.
The weekend-long 'festival' inspired events will be streamed lived via YouTube, Periscope and Twitch. Find out more at ElectricGT.co.
Races will take place right across the globe on world-class circuits say organisers, starting in Europe on tracks such as Catalunya, Mugello, Nurburgring, Assen and Estoril.
Cars in the Electric GT series will be Tesla Model S P85+ versions, but with interest running hot in the zero-emission racing category, the Electric GT V2.0 series has also been announced, for which the Tesla Model S EGT P100D will be eligible.
"The Electric GT V2.0 design is the fastest way towards the 'Age of Light'," said Mark Gemmell, co-founder and CEO of Electric GT Holdings.
"I am very excited to be using the Tesla Model S P100D as it is incredibly quick and innovative. This week we opened the subscription period for teams and the new car announcement is an exciting prospect for those who want to join us."
This won't be the first time a Tesla Model S has entered competitive motorsport, having set a Pikes Peak Hill Climb record in June 2016.
