BMW is working on a facelift for its 7 Series-based 5 Series GT model that appears to be concentrated mainly on softening the jaunty, high-rumped rear end of the current model.
Although changes also appear to be in line for the front end, they will likely be restricted to a revised lower bumper and maybe some detail around the headlights.
The rear bumper looks to be in line for an easily-done revision too, for example in the positioning of the inset reflectors and a redesigned exhaust outlet panel.
The changes come reportedly as a result of slower than expected sales, including in Australia, where the company recently shuffled the mix to make the 5 Series GT more reachable with a new sub-$100,000 entry-level 520d model. Sales for the year to date, according to VFACTS, total just 99 units – of which 23 alone were sold in October. For the same period last year (January to October), BMW had sold just 47.
The revised car is expected to be revealed at the Detroit auto show in January 2013, with Australian deliveries following some time during the year.
