Peugeot 207 CC goes on sale

Flip-top Puggy keeps costs down and raises the stakes with the competition

Peugeot's 207 range is now joined by the 207 CC with a powered folding-roof.

We first mentioned the 207 CC last year (more here) and now, the car is available in Australia, priced from $34,990 -- about $2000 more than the Mitsubishi Colt Cabrio.

As for the Colt and the Peugeot's antecedent, the 206 CC, the new car offers '2+2' seating. That's enough for a couple of kids on a short trip.

For the price, the buyer gets the entry-level 207 CC with naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre four. A turbo version of this engine is also available as an option.

Development of both engines was a joint undertaking by Peugeot and BMW, with the engines also fitted to the latest MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S.

Compared with the 1.6-litre engine fitted to the 206 CC predecessor, the naturally aspirated unit fitted to the 207 CC is more powerful (88kW) and more economical (6.5lt/100km combined cycle).

As a bonus, the reduced fuel consumption of the new engine also means reduced emissions. This engine powers the 207 XT and XE models too.

The turbo engine, which can be found under the bonnet of the 207 GT as well, develops 110kW of power and 240Nm of torque at just 1400rpm. Price for this model is $39,990.

Drive to the front wheels is via a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic, which cannot be specified for the Turbo.  The automatic option, which features a sequential shifting function, raises the price of the naturally-aspirated car to $37,190.

Passive safety has been enhanced with additional reinforcement not present in the hatchback models. Other safety features are exclusive to the 207 CC among Peugeot models and these include a roll-over protection system when the roof is lowered and a unique design of side impact airbag to complement the front impact airbags.

Whilst many of the features of the 207 CC are shared with lesser models in the range, the folding roof isn't. Furthermore, the new car's roof doesn't have manual release handles, as the 206 CC's did. Lowering or raising the roof is a fully automated push-button operation which takes about 25 seconds.

As a further example of Peugeot's attention to greater convenience and ease of use in the 207 CC, the full-size spare included in the vehicle's specification will be appreciated by many Australian drivers.
