Leaked new vehicle registration figures for June have shown Aussies didn’t let a federal election distract them from the true nation-building business of buying new wheels.
More than 128,500 new vehicles were registered in June, an increase of over 2700 units on the same month in 2015. Year to date, the market is almost 20,000 units up and tracking towards another record.
Toyota will predictably top the marketplace when official figures are released tomorrow. However, as early as last week some marques were trumpeting their record June, chiefly among them Hyundai which posted its biggest month ever.
Hyundai’s June total of 12,300 vehicles was the marque’s highest single monthly Australian total in its history. For the month, Hyundai regos were a substantial 11.7% higher than June 2016.
Leading the Hyundai total and Australia’s best-selling vehicle in June, the i30 (pictured) accounted for 6432 units -- 16% higher than the same month in 2015 and almost 2000 units more than the next best model from any brand.
At the other end of the marketplace, Mercedes-Benz will tomorrow announce its highest ever monthly registration result. With almost 4000 units for the month, Mercedes even topped its March 2016 record result.
The brand has now topped 20,000 units for the first half of 2016.
All three mainstream luxury German brands are up on 2015 year to date, BMW by a startling 25%-plus. A number of smaller brands will also claim record monthly results tomorrow.
