Next Volvo S60 caught undisguised

Sleek Swedish sedan captured without camo months ahead of its unveil

Volvo's all-new sedan sibling for the V60 has been leaked just days after the new mid-size wagon was unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

The Swedish car-maker had planned to unveil the S60 in a few months' time, but those plans may now be in disarray following the publication of this image of Volvo's new rival for the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4 over the weekend by Swedish car blog Teknikens Varld.

Reportedly taken at Volvo's Torslanda plant, the rear three-quarter image shows the new S60 completely undisguised, confirming it will share its good looks with the V60 wagon including its S90-inspired C-shape tail-lights, twin chrome exhaust outlets and sporty rear bootlid spoiler.

Based on the same SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) that underpins not only the V60 but the larger S90/V90 and flagship XC90, the new S60 engine line-up will be dominated by 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

Later on in 2019, mild-hybrid electrified petrol and diesel powertrains are expected to join the top-of-the-range S60 T8 hybrid, which combines a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce around 300kW/650Nm.

Other technology to be adopted by the S60 includes emergency autonomous braking that can detect pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, plus a collision mitigation system that can steer, brake and even accelerate away from a potential collision.

Like the bigger XC90, the S60 will also come equipped with a semi-autonomous cruise control system that works up to a highly illegal 130km/h.

Inside, the next S60 benefits from the V60's large portrait-style infotainment system that also incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It's not known when exactly Volvo will now officially unveil the S60, which was originally slated for reveal in the European summer -- around in June.
