Next-gen Volkswagen Golf wagon confirmed
Wagon based on eighth-generation Golf accidentally confirmed in comms meeting between VW workers and execsFears that the Volkswagen Golf wagon was about to be axed have been addressed by a new VW document that confirms the more practical body style will live on alongside next year's new eighth-generation hatch.
According to car blog
, accidental confirmation of the new Golf Variant (as the wagon version is known in Germany) came in a communication between employees at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant and company execs."The entire production of the Golf Variant will be relocated to the main plant here in Wolfsburg," read the document, confirming the wagon version would continue.
The current Golf Variant is produced at the car-maker's Zwickau manufacturing facility in Germany.
Set to be on sale next year, it's hoped Volkswagen will once again produce both a jacked-up Alltrack version and a hot R model based on the more practical wagon body shape.
Concerns were initially raised last year that the wagon was facing the chop over poor sales and the general trend of buyers plumping for small SUVs.
One body style that won't return is the three-door that has been confirmed will not be introduced when the Golf Mk8 is launched in Europe next month.
