New Subaru WRX, STI and EV timing confirmed

The next few years is going to see a flurry of all-new high-profile models from Subaru.

A leaked production schedule confirms what we’ve previously reported via inside sources about all-new Subaru WRX and WRX STI models (due in 2021 and 2022 respectively), and also provides arrival times for the brand’s first EV – which may be called Evoltis.

The leaked production schedule was posted to the GR86.org forum and shows the model rollout all the way up to 2023, which is when the sixth-generation Impreza and its SUV cousin, the XV, will enter production.

The first high-profile model from the Japanese car-maker will commence production from early 2021 in the form of the rear-drive Subaru BRZ sports car, which is again a joint-venture product with the Toyota 86.

The new Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 could be revealed late this year, and are tipped to get new looks and more power.

This will be followed by another blockbuster sports car, the Subaru WRX, which is tipped to be revealed around April 2021 before entering production later next year, in the northern fall/autumn – around October.

Subaru’s all-new fifth-generation WRX has been a long-time coming and, together with a new boxer engine that will bring more herbs and spices to the table than the current 2.0-litre mill (197kW/350Nm), it will also get a fancy new interior, which was recently leaked.

The all-new Subaru WRX STI is expected to be revealed in the first half of 2022, with production to commence 12-months after the WRX, so around October 2022.

The next will almost certainly be powered by a bonkers version of Subaru’s 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine (FA24).

Subaru’s new halo performance car will face some serious competition but is shaping up to be the most powerful WRX STI to date, with insiders saying the gloves are off when it comes to performance with talk of a circa-300kW beast currently in development.

The first electric vehicle from Subaru – another joint-venture with Toyota – will be a mid-size SUV that enters production from around April 2022.

Less exciting but more important to Subaru’s profits are its bread-and-butter vehicles, with the leaked vehicle production list showing a facelifted Forester rolling out of Subaru factories in early 2021, meaning we could see this vehicle in Australia later next year.

There are also facelifts coming from mid-2022 for the latest Liberty (known as the Legacy in the US), Outback and Ascent, none of which are available in Australia yet.

Completely new versions of Subaru’s all-important Impreza and XV will enter production in early 2023, suggesting we could see all-new models here later that year.

Combined, the Subaru XV and Impreza siblings are Subaru’s top-selling models in Australia, although the Forester remains the brand’s best-selling single vehicle.
