The Passat is Volkswagen's third best selling car in the Australian market -- and Volkswagen intends to build on that with a tweaked version of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine.
Equipped with piezo injectors, the upgraded DOHC diesel develops 125kW of power, versus 103kW for the pre-upgrade engine. Torque amounts to 350Nm, hitting its stride between 1750 and 2500rpm (320Nm for the old engine).
With the output improvements, the new Passat 2.0 TDI will reach 100km/h from a standing start in a little under 8.6 seconds (sedan). That compares favourably with 9.8 seconds for the older engine. As for the earlier car, the new diesel engine drives through a six-speed DSG box.
Volkswagen has bumped up the prices for the new Passat 2.0 TDI to match the pricing of the Passat 2.0 TFSI -- an increase of $2500 -- but as well as a substantially improved engine, the buyer also enjoys 7.5x17-inch alloy wheels in lieu of the 7.0x16-inch wheels fitted previously.
The new Passat 2.0 TDI sedan is priced at $44,990 and the wagon $46,990.
