New 2024 MG3 locked in for February 26 reveal

MG’s new-generation city car to debut at Geneva show ahead of late-2024 Aussie debut

The incoming new-generation 2024 MG3 has been teased ahead of the compact hatchback’s official unveiling at the Geneva motor show on February 26.

Following an embarrassing leak online earlier this month of a completely undisguised car in China, this official look at the front-end styling suggests the 2024 MG3 will indeed adopt styling cues borrowed from the latest battery-powered MG4.

Instead of switching straight to all-electric power, Australia’s best-selling city car will stick with conventional combustion engines when the new model arrives Down Under later this year, to ensure it remains affordable.

However, the adoption of new tech, safety systems and more sophisticated electrified powertrains should see it repositioned above the current bargain $19,990 drive-away pricing.

When it’s unwrapped at the Swiss show, expect the cheapest MG3 to come equipped with an 89kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

But Australians should also be offered a new hybrid powertrain that will blend the 1.5-litre engine with a 2.1kWh lithium-ion battery and e-motor to produce a combined 130kW.

Inside, the next MG3 will potentially come with a large 10.25-inch infotainment system lifted straight from the MG4.

In 2023, the success of models like the MG3 saw MG end the year as the seventh-best-selling brand in the Australian market, with 58,346 deliveries.

Out of those, the MG3 accounted for 15,430 sales, beating all its rivals in the light hatch class.

Proving the company’s continued commitment to Australia, a heavily camouflaged MG3 prototype has been spotted testing on Australia roads multiple times.
