The Finer Details

According to Mitsubishi Australia, the Outlander Sport HEV wasn’t built with our market’s strict design regulations in mind and therefore can’t legally be offered here.

Nevertheless, the model will enter the New Zealand market in XLS and VRX grades, each offering a 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless smartphone connectivity, a digital driver’s display, a panoramic glass roof and 212mm of ground clearance.

The powertrain can operate both as a series and parallel hybrid system, automatically switching between the two modes and electric drive (low-speed) as needed; the electric juice provided by a small 1.1kWh battery pack.

The Road Ahead

The addition of the Outlander Sport will expand Mitsubishi’s Kiwi SUV portfolio out to five, joining the first-gen ASX, Eclipse Cross, regular Outlander and Pajero Sport.

As for Australia, we’re yet to see or hear what Mitsubishi plans to do in terms of entering the plugless hybrid market, though there have been rumours a new electrified ASX is in the works for 2028.
