Honda has released a sporty ‘Red Edition’ version of its Civic to celebrate next week’s arrival of the Type R hot hatch.
Offered across four hatch grades (VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L and VTi-LX) for an extra $2498 fitted, the Red Edition pack is limited to just 228 vehicles – the kiloWatt output of the new Civic Type R.
The pack comprises four 17-inch black alloy wheels, a red front under spoiler, red rear under spoiler, red side skirts and Red Edition floor mats.
That only catch is that, when applied to VTi and VTi-S, the black 17-inch alloys require matching upsized tyres, which are sold separately and incur additional cost.
It will be available in four colours, including White Orchid Pearlescent, Lunar Silver Metallic, Sonic Grey Pearlescent and Crystal Black Pearlescent.

Honda Australia director Stephen Collins said a limited number of Red Edition vehicles, which follow in the footsteps of last year’s Black Pack Civic sedan and this year’s Orange Pack Civic hatch, was secured to coincide with the Civic Type R’s arrival.
“Customers love the boldness of the Honda Civic sedan and hatch and the eye-catching Red Edition is an attention-grabbing styling statement for Civic customers looking to add some individuality to their cars,” he said.
Honda says it expects to this year land 495 examples of the Type R, which has already attracted 420 orders and more than 6500 registrations of interest.
Accompanied like all new Hondas by a five-year, unlimited-km warranty, the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record holder will come in just one spec, powered by a 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine matched with a new close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching capability.
Three driving modes — Comfort, Sport (default) and +R — vary the car’s steering, throttle response, rev-matching, adaptive dampers and stability control threshold.
Also standard is LaneWatch, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Traction Control System (TCS), anti-lock brakes and the Honda Sensing safety suite including Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation System (RDMS) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
“After driving the Civic Type R, potential customers will appreciate the flexibility of the adjustable driving modes and the amount of compliance they provide for every-day driving,” said Collins.
