GMC Hummer EV pick-up conquers sub-zero tests

US deliveries of sold-out pick-up to begin late 2021; GMC’s new Hummer EV SUV to be revealed April 3

A cheeky shot has already been leaked online online, but we now have an official date for the global unveiling of GMC’s all-electric Hummer SUV.

The covers will come off the electric off-road wagon at 5:00pm EDT on April 3 (8:00am April 5 AEST), but it won’t hit the road until 2023, around two years after its pick-up truck sibling goes on sale in the US.

Powertrain details are still yet to be confirmed, however, reports suggest the Hummer EV SUV will share the same triple-motor set-up (745kW/15,600Nm) as the GMC Hummer Edition 1.

Full specifications are not yet confirmed, but the SUV will likely offer the same impressive off-road tech as its pick-up sibling, including 18 cameras, 400mm of ground clearance, a 50-degree approach angle, 38-degree departure angle and 32-degree breakover.

The Hummer EV pick-up is also said to offer a 560km driving range as well as a 0-100km/h dash in three seconds.

In the meantime, GMC has been busy making sure its new EVs will be able to handle freezing temperatures, taking to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Taking on sub-zero terrain and slippery surfaces, GMC released the above YouTube video, showing vision of the Tesla Cybertruck-fighter drifting through a snow-field.

The American manufacturer says key tests included integrating its powerful all-wheel drive torque distribution with the traction control system, as well as calibrating and testing the electronic stability control system.

Pricing for the dual-cab GMC Hummer EV will start from around $US112,595, or around $A150,000, while we’ll have to wait for next month’s reveal to find out how much the SUV version will cost.

Neither Hummer EV has been confirmed for right-hand drive production, let alone Australian release. But if either model were to come here, it would be sold through GM Specialty Vehicles.
