FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Brabus B63S-700 6x6

German tuning firm works its magic on AMG's G 63 six-wheel drive monster

Mega-rich adventurous types who may have found Mercedes-Benz’s ‘garden variety’ AMG G 63 6X6 a little mundane can rejoice, as the men and women at Brabus have breathed even more fire into the off-road behemoth’s belly.

Starting with AMG’s already-potent 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, the tuners have stretched power from 418kW to 515kW, while peak torque has jumped by a similarly stupendous 199Nm to a total of 959Nm.

The increase in grunt is thanks to bigger turbos, a modified engine management unit, additional heat shielding for the intake system, high-flow catalytic converters and a (louder) sports exhaust system.

The engine is still coupled to AMG’s Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and the five diff-locks and other off-road hardware remain to ensure that the truck’s all-terrain prowess remains unblemished.

Working in symphony, the mechanical orchestra can heave the beast to 100km/h in 7.4 seconds, which respectable considering the Brabus tips the scales at 3775kg. Top speed remains electronically limited to 160km/h in order to prevent strain on the 37-inch off-road biased balloon tyres.

The B63S-700’s exhaust system allows the driver to choose from ‘Sport’ and ‘Coming Home’ modes in order to best appropriate noise levels. Think of it as automotive volume control.

Externally, the big pick-up is covered with lashings of chrome on the bumpers, grille and along the flanks, as well as a fistful of Brabus badges and carbon-fibre garnishes.

The interior is equally bold; with bright red quilted leather dominating the cabin -- even on the floor. The part-Alcantara pews feature embroidered Brabus logos, just in case you may think you’re in something else, while aluminium shift paddles allow the pilot to utilise the seven-speed auto to its fullest potential.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, but Brabus’ latest release to cost significantly more than the ‘standard’ AMG G 63 6x6 ($US$500,000 in North America).
