AIMS: Patrol tackles Cruiser

As promised, Nissan has delivered pricing for its all-new Patrol that pitches it directly against the equivalent Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series.

The Y62 Patrol is a distinctly different up-market proposition compared to its Y61 predecessor and won’t be available with a turbodiesel engine option when it goes on-sale next February. Instead it offers only a 298kW/560Nm 5.6-litre V8 mated to a seven-speed auto and rolling on all independent suspension.

It’s so different to the current Patrol that a limited range of diesel Y61s are going to continue on alongside the successor. But bullishly, Nissan is claiming the petrol V8 Patrol is a better financial choice than the turbodiesel LandCruiser for the first five-and-a-half years of ownership.

The new Patrol lineup will comprise three models, the ST-L, Ti and Ti-L. They line up against the 4.6-litre 228kW/439Nm LandCruiser GXL, VX and Sahara. And in two out of three cases, the Nissan is cheaper.

The ST-L undercuts the GXL, $82,200 to $83,490 and the Ti is priced at $92,850 versus the VX’s $94,490. It’s only the top-spec Ti-L that is more expensive than the LandCruiser Sahara, at $113,900 versus $113,490. All these prices are plus on-road costs.

Final pricing details were confirmed in the run-up to this week’s Sydney motor show, at which the Patrol will be one of the stars of the Nissan stand, alongside the Pulsar sedan and SSS hatch small cars and the 2013 GT-R super-coupe.
