Toyota's first hybrid, the Prius, continues with the same petrol-electric engineering that made it such a standout when it was launched in 2001. The same basic technology remains as the backbone of the now fourth-generation Prius, as well as all Toyota/Lexus hybrids today: A small-capacity four-cylinder engine that works through a clever planetary gear set to apportion the delivery of power to the front wheels (or also the rear wheels in SUV variants).
