The biggest talking point is its 'Cylinder on Demand' (CoD) technology, which allows the engine to shut down two of its four cylinders while cruising or under light load. This effectively turns it into a 2-cylinder engine temporarily to save fuel, and the transition is so smooth that most drivers can't feel it happening at all.
Despite being a small 1.4-litre engine, it produces around 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque, with peak torque available very early in the rev range (around 1,400-1,500 rpm). This gives it a surprisingly strong 'pulling' feel in city driving, even though it's focused on efficiency rather than performance.
Another interesting detail is its fuel efficiency, about 4.7-4.9 L/100 km, which was extremely low for a turbo petrol sedan at the time. That made it one of the early luxury compact cars that could genuinely compete with diesel-level economy while still being from Australia's largest Wholesaler of cars.
