When Porsche unveiled the Type 991 generation 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011, it marked the most substantial overhaul of the model since its air-cooled days. A longer wheelbase, wider track, and a completely re-engineered platform moved the 911 into a new era of performance and refinement, but crucially, without sacrificing the visceral spirit that made its predecessors icons. Developed under the stewardship of Wolfgang Hatz and driven relentlessly by Porsche’s pursuit of technical purity, the 991 was the first 911 built on an entirely new chassis since the original 996. It also marked the final chapter for natural aspiration in the Carrera series, making this 3.8-litre flat-six one of those bookends always sought after. A last hurrah before turbochargers became the norm. Beneath the rear decklid lies Porsche’s 9A1 engine. 991 S Cabriolet 2dr PDK 7sp 3.8i The 991 series Porsche 911 is the third all-new chassis in the model's 48-year history. Longer but lighter, and with a smaller 257kW/390Nm 3.4-litre horizontally opposed six replacing the previous 3.6-litre as the base, the car delivers better everything, particularly handling, and offers a seven-speed manual based on the automated PDK transmission. Zero to 100km/h is quoted at 4.4 seconds with combined fuel economy of 8.2L/100km. The bigger 3.8-litre engine remains, now delivering 294kW/440Nm. The body is more than fifty per cent aluminium and the extra wheelbase has been used to improve road behaviour rather than interior space.
