Overview
The new Beetle created tremendous excitement when first aired as the Concept 1 at the 1994 Detroit motor show. So much so, that it went on sale internationally in 1998, arriving here in 2000. Running VW Golf underpinnings, the three-door Beetle coupe comes in two forms: a 75kW/148Nm 1.6-litre petrol with five-speed manual or four-speed auto transmissions, or a five-speed manual 1.9-litre turbo diesel. It looks like a Beetle but drives like a Golf, except the packaging isn't as efficient. Standard gear includes ESP stability control, ABS, dual front and front side airbags, air-conditioning - and complimentary vase, with flower.
