The Passat was Volkswagen's first move away from the time-honoured air-cooled, rear-engine configuration, beating the Golf here in 1974. Passat sedan and wagon essentially share the Golf's transverse drivetrain, along with familiar VW engines. There is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, two turbo diesels producing 103kW/320Nm and 125kW/350Nm, a 3.2-litre V6 and in the R36 version a 3.6-litre V6. The Passat wagon is notable for its large interior, generous load area and on-road security. The 2.0-litre turbo produces 147kW/280Nm, driving through six-speed DSG transmission. Base equipment includes stability and traction control, eight airbags, alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, eight-speaker six-CD audio and trip computer.
