Overview
The Passat was the first Volkswagen to move away from the time-honoured air-cooled, rear-engine configuration, beating the Golf here in 1974. The Passat today is closely related to the Golf, as it shares essentially the same transverse drivetrain, along with many familiar VW engines. There is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, two turbodiesels producing 103kW/320Nm and 125kW/350Nm, a 3.2-litre V6 and ? in the R36 version ? a 3.6-litre V6. The Passat is notable for its large interior, giant 565-litre boot and secure on-road behaviour. Base equipment includes stability and traction control, eight airbags, alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, eight-speaker six-CD audio and trip computer.
