Size is what the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is about. Owing a lot to the ML-Class, it almost looks like a vastly overgrown B-Class. What it is, is a massive, seven-seat constant-4WD wagon with heaps of luggage space. The R-Class has all the usual Benz safety features, as well as the general quality, and is unexpectedly wieldy on the road. Four engines are available; two turbo diesel V6s, a petrol V6 and a V8, all driving a Benz seven-speed auto. The base R 280 CDI comes with a three-litre, 140kW/440Nm turbo diesel V6. From R 320 upwards, a long-wheelbase option is available.
