Mazda's mighty 3 MPS returns with all the fury of its predecessor, driving almost unimaginable torque through to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. 190kW and 380Nm from a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine are impressive in any car, let alone a small one. The look is confident with a gaping bonnet scoop, 18-inch alloys and an aero kit for the five-door body. Spend an extra three grand or so for the Luxury version and you get adaptive Xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers and a thumping 10-speaker Bose sound system above the already generous standard specification.
