Lantra became Elantra in 2000 after Lotus and Mitsubishi stopped bothering Hyundai about name similarities with Elan (Lotus) and Elante (Mitsubishi). The small Hyundai sedan today competes in the Holden Astra/Mitsubishi Lancer segment with the usual value-for-money argument a convincing vote-swinger. With a spritely 105kW/186Nm two-litre engine, five-speed manual and four-speed auto transmissions - and the inclusion of stability control in optional SX and SLX safety packs - the attractive Elantra competes strongly in a vicious market segment. Standard SX gear includes ABS and dual front airbags. Front side and curtain airbags form part of the Elantra SX safety pack.
