Overview
BMW's 1 Series might look like yet another small hatchback. It is, and isn't. For one, it's rear-drive, making it probably the best balanced of its ilk. For another, it doesn't quite have front-drive packaging advantages. For street cred, and driving pleasure, it delivers, especially with the latest 118d and 123d turbodiesels. Although back seat legroom is less than most, there's still five-door hatchback practicality. The new 2.0-litre diesel engines combine strong performance with impressive efficiency: the 123d produces 150kW/400Nm, reaches 100km/h in 7.0 seconds and averages 5.2l/100km in six-speed manual form. The six-speed auto reaches 100km/h in 7.1 seconds and averages 5.6l/100km.
