I've owned a few Porsches over the years, and this one has been the hardest to let go. It's making way for a new entry to the collection, so here we are.
This is a 964 C2 in manual, rear-wheel drive specification - widely regarded as the last of the truly iconic air-cooled 911 shapes, and by many accounts the pinnacle of air-cooled development. The 3.6 litre flat-six is the largest ever fitted to a road-going 911 of this era, and it sounds exactly as you'd hope. The wing turrets framing your view down the road ahead never get old.
Clean 964 manuals are genuinely hard to find now. Global production numbers were small to begin with, and many have since been sacrificed to Singer-style restomods. What's left in unmolested, well-documented condition is a very short list.
This car is on that list.
This car has had three owners from new, with a documented history file that covers the car's entire life:
1. Original owner, purchased new from Porsche in 1990
2. Second owner, purchased from York Motors in 1997 at 30,000km
3. Current owner (me), purchased from Autohaus Hamilton in 2017
The service file is six pages long and accounts for every major interval. Servicing has been carried out by Autocoupe in Melbourne (under my ownership) and Autohaus Hamilton in Sydney before that. A complete engine rebuild was carried out by Autohaus Hamilton prior to my purchase, approximately 30,000km ago.
The paint is close to perfect. Interior is wonderfully preserved. Every major system has been attended to during my ownership including suspension, air conditioning, steering and all scheduled services.
The only modification to this car is a period-appropriate Blaupunkt Bremen SQ head unit. Everything else is as it left Zuffenhausen.
Unlike earlier 911s that demanded a certain tolerance for heat and noise from both driver and passenger, the 964 is a car you can genuinely use. Eight-way adjustable seats, functional air conditioning, and auto speed control mean you can drive it all day and arrive in good shape. The engine behind you will remind you why you bought it every time you pull out of a car park. The unique Diamond Blue Metallic colour is always asked about.
The next owner is inheriting a car that has been in expert hands its entire life. There is nothing to do other than enjoy it.
