This 1987 Mercedes-Benz 500SL is a UK-delivered example imported into Australia in 2019 and finished in the classic and highly desirable combination of Dunkeld Blue over Beige. It’s a timeless specification that suits the R107 perfectly and presents beautifully in person.
The 500SL is regarded as the sweet spot of the R107 range. With the most powerful and robust engine offered in the series the 5.0L M117 V8, the power band feels elastic with a noticeably stronger driving experience than the smaller-capacity variants. It’s a true analogue Mercedes roadster from the over-engineered era (watch Harry's Garage review).
I purchased the car during lockdown in 2020 and carried out a comprehensive refresh that same year. It received a full bare-metal respray by Novak Autobody (South Melbourne), along with complete interior reupholstery and new carpets.
Mechanically, the engine was removed for a top-end rebuild by Prostar Motors, with timing chains replaced as a precaution. The air conditioning system was fully reconditioned, and key ancillaries were repaired or replaced as required including fuel pumps and related components to ensure the car is mechanically sorted rather than just cosmetically refreshed. A new stainless steel exhaust system was also fitted, which you'll find intoxicating when it comes on song.
The car is currently on full Victorian registration. It has always been garaged and driven occasionally on weekedns.
Overall, it presents in fine condition cosmetically, structurally, and mechanically. Only selling due to lack of use and space with another vehicle and motorbike having taken over weekend duties.
A properly restored and well-maintained 500SL that is ready to enjoy.
