- 80s time capsule, rare in Australia
- ice cold air conditioning
- thousands spent on bodywork and upholstery
- a turbo model sold on Collecting Cars last year for $16,800
One new car in 1985 was the world's best for slipping through the air: the Subaru Vortex XT. It boasted a drag coefficient of 0.29 thanks to flush door handles, 'graph paper' style hubcaps, plus streamlined mirrors and glass.
Inside, the Vortex XT has 'pods' either side of the asymmetrical and height adjustable steering wheel, to control the pop-up headlights, single sweeping wiper and ventilation.
It has ice cold air conditioning, plus a manual sunroof that either tilts to open, or can be completely removed and stored in a special vinyl bag in the boot. The original radio still works.
I have owned this '85 front wheel drive Vortex XT manual since 2018 - the previous owner was a lady who'd bought it from an older couple. I believe there were other previous owners. I've spent thousands on bodywork and upholstery, but now it's time for someone else to appreciate it.
During my ownership, the Vortex XT has had both timing belts changed. It's been on club registration, so it hasn't been driven a lot. It has 322,000 kms on the clock. It drives nicely, but it's no race car. The non-turbo 1.8 EA82 engine is the same as the Subaru Leone, so engine parts aren't too hard to find.
The paint is pretty good - there's some clear coat lifting on the passenger door.
The interior carpet has some staining and some interior plastics are getting brittle. There's a dashmat glued to the dashboard by a previous owner to maintain the integrity of the dash.
It won't be sold with a roadworthy, but it's currently registered via a car club. I'm planning on keeping the personalised plates, but if it's a deal breaker then something can be worked out.
The car is in the Morayfield area, just north of Brisbane.
