For sale is this 1985 Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia with power steering; a unique car to see on the road these days.
This car has been my daily drive for several years, and it's been enjoyable and easy to drive and park.
The car has had a lot of work done to it, most of it by myself. I enjoy working on cars, and this has been a great project.
I bought the car with a bottom-end knock, so I ended up buying a 1986 Mazda GC and swapped the motor and Transmission over. I also took the rear disk brake setup from the Mazda and put it onto this as well.
I upgraded the steering to a refurbished power steering rack so that it's easy to drive and park.
The rear shocks have been replaced, and all of the suspension bushes have also been replaced.
It will be easier to list the other things replaced.

The engine has been torn down and has had a new head gasket, water pump, oil pump, timing belt and tensioner replaced. New pcv valve and internal rocker cover gasket. New main rocker cover gaskets and bolt grommets. New fuel pump. The carburettor has been rebuilt by a professional carburettor mechanic. The distributor has had a new vacuum advance diaphragm replaced. New ignition leads. All new engine mounts for Automatic. New thermostat. New spark plugs. The PCV reed valves in the intake have been replaced. Oil pan gasket replaced. Rear main oil seal replaced. Valve gaps have been adjusted. New air filter, new fuel filter. New starter motor and Starter Relay. New temp sensor, new thermo fan switch. An ignition immobiliser was installed by the previous owner.
Transmission:
Trans has been taken to a Trans Mechanic and had a full service and gasket and seals replacement led to ensure smooth operation and no leaks. (Serviced in 2026) The Trans Band has been adjusted.
Shifter bushes below the selector have been replaced. Two new CV drive shafts.
Exhaust:
Manifold and downpipe gaskets replaced.
Suspension system:
All bushes and ball joints have been replaced on the whole car.
New old stock Munro shocks installed in the rear.
Installed new wheel bearings front and back.
Steering:
Installed a refurbished power steering rack along with the necessary VSV EGR Vacuum Switch Purge Solenoid Valves for idle adjusting to raise the rpm when in use. Installed new tie rod ends, left and right.
Had a wheel alignment and balance.
Cooling system: Flushed and serviced. New hoses installed.
Breaks:
Rear brakes converted to disks and callipers. Front rotor and pads replaced. Rear rotors machined and new pads installed. The brake balancing valve in the engine bay was swapped to suit disk brakes.
Interior:
The interior has had the carpets and seats cleaned. Installed new speakers in the front and rear. New Bluetooth stereo installed. Hands-free phone calls with a microphone.
The digital dash has had the small bulbs replaced. New matching steering wheel installed.
Boot lid gas struts replaced.
The boot-removable parcel shelf has had the corners repaired.
Most of the major work was completed in 2023, with regular maintenance carried out from there.
Things that still need repairing:
The Ac system is not plumbed up.
The bonnet, hatch and roof have some rust. See photos.
There are a few small dents. See Photos
The digital dash works when the air temperature is above 27 degrees. I believe it’s the capacitors that need replacing. They have slightly higher capacitance when warm. The dash flickers when cold and then pops into working when it's warm enough. I have a list of the capacitors that are on the board for replacement. I just haven’t had the time to solder new ones on.
Rear shocks could be replaced.
This car is a joy to work on and to drive. I’m hoping it can go to someone who will enjoy it as much as I have.
Inspections are welcome and encouraged. The car is located in Elderslie, 2570 NSW. Happy to answer any questions too.
Selling with a spare set of side window glass, door rubbers, and all spare parts I have. Selling as baby is on the way.
