The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit is a full-size luxury car produced by Rolls-Royce Motors, in Crewe, England, from 1980 to 1997. It was the first model in the SZ series. The Silver Spur is a long-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, produced from 1980 to 2000. It was the first car to feature a retractable Spirit of Ecstasy: the spring-loaded mascot sank into the radiator shell if dislodged from its position.
The Silver Spirit was introduced by Rolls-Royce in 1980 as the first of a new generation of company models. It formed the basis for the Flying Spur, Silver Dawn, Touring Limousine, Park Ward, and Bentley Mulsanne/Eight series. The Spirit/Spur carried over the basic design of the Silver Shadow, its 6.75 L L410 V8 engine and GM-sourced THM400 3-speed automatic gearbox, and unitary bodywork manufactured at Pressed Steel, which followed the styling of the Pininfarina designed Camargue.
The Spur/Spirit continued the Silver Shadow's emphasis on ride quality by utilizing its hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension, modified with Girling automatic hydraulic ride height control system and gas-charged shock absorbers. Sealed beam headlamps were fitted in the United States due to longstanding regulations, while European laws allowed for the fitment of more modern composite units.
The car is chassis number SCAZS 0007CCH04629 and built on the 25th June 1982.
When the car left the factory, the car was painted in Light Oyster Metallic. The car has Beige leather trim and Cumberland Stone colour carpets.
It has been restored about 10 years ago and I suspect it was repainted at that time with the bottom half contrasting brown added at that time.
The car is believed to be sold new by Henlys of Salisbury in the UK and at some point made its way to Australia.
While it has been restored or at least repainted at some stage, it still has its original radio and tape player. Currently they do not power up but for originality they are still in place.
I do not have any service records, but I do have a reproduction owner’s manual. I do know that the power steering system has been recently overhauled and recently the rear spheres have been replaced. The air conditioning has been re-gassed.
Like most Rolls-Royce of this age, it does need some TLC.
Items like the front power seats do not work (new seat gearbox needed on both sides), and the power windows are slow and temperamental. As mentioned, the original radio will not power up. The central locking works on most doors, but I think it is electrical rather than mechanical.
Door wood capping’s will also need to be refurbished.
These items do not stop the driving experience and it something the new owner can work on progressively over time.
Please note: All three fuel filters have now been replaced, the fuel sender unit also has been replaced, and last but no means least, the two front braking spheres have been replaced.
It is a great car for Sunday club runs and weekend cruises, and is currently registered on Historic plates which is not transferrable.
