If you’re an enthusiast looking for a restoration job, this rare Porsche 924 might be the car for you.
The 924 was Porsche’s first car with a straight-four cylinder engine in the front. They are wonderful cars to drive — perfectly balanced front to back, being rear driven with independent suspension and the gearbox/differential in the back. The design is stylish, with a sleek body and pop-up lights - it turns heads wherever it drives!
The engine starts and runs but has some fuel pressure issues. It will need some work to obtain a roadworthy certificate and before it can be driven long distances reliably. I am selling without registration and the car will therefore need to be towed away (also to avoid the stress of a possible breakdown!)
The car has a new Bosch ignition coil, fuel pump and plugs. I will throw in various spare parts (two refurbished fuel pressure regulators and fuel distributor, fuel pump relay, fuses, horn and windscreen wiper relays, left doorhandle).
With some work, this 924 could be returned to its former glory and used as a hobby car or sold for a handsome profit as long as you have managed the restoration budget. This is by far the cheapest 924 on the market and you will see that 924s in good condition are selling for a much higher price.
I welcome any offers once you have had the opportunity to inspect and consider how much the car is worth to you.
KNOWN ISSUES
Mechanical issues:
• Fuel pressure – starts and runs, but acceleration uneven. The fuel pressure regulator in the car adjustable. May need one of the other FPRs swapped in or intake system checked for air leaks. (Bosch K-jetronic continuous fuel injection system, naturally aspirated).
• Fuel circuit needs to be checked. The fuel pump fuse has a tendency to heat up (potentially too much current). The second (in-tank) fuel pump may not be functioning properly.
• Gearbox is worn and crunches between 2nd and 3rd when hot.
• Coolant hoses are worn and should be replaced; radiator fan occasionally drops out.
• Horn does not work (may need to be re-wired).
Cosmetic issues:
• Rear wiper, aftermarket aircon and electric sunroof do not work. (Rear wiper not needed for registration).
• Some dints and scratches on the body.
• Steering wheel, vinyl seats and dashboard are worn.
• Top of dashboard is in poor condition and covered by carpet.
• Lefthand door handle needs replacement. Lefthand window switch does not work (but driver’s side window switches work).
COMPLIANCE AND ODOMETER
This is a 1984 (euro-only) import model (VIN is WPOZZZ 92ZEN403592). It was imported from overseas at some point before I purchased it in 2012 and does not have an Australian compliance plate. However, the car comes with an Australian Standards compliance certificate (issued in NSW) and has been continuously registered in NSW/Victoria for the past 14 years. The registration history should avoid compliance issues when obtaining a RWC.
Note that the odometer reading is 14380 miles (clocks at 99,999 miles). It was around 80,000 when I purchased it and do not know whether it has been around the clock before.
INSPECTION AND ASKING PRICE
If you might be interested, I’d encourage you to look at the car and arrange an independent inspection. Prior to making an offer, be sure to factor the car’s mechanical and cosmetic issues and the cost of the work needed to restore it.
Give me a call if you’d like to discuss. Looking forward to hearing from you!
