GTV = Gran Turismo Veloce and the 2000 series, first introduced in 1971 is a machine that distilled everything Alfa Romeo learned through two decades of successful competition fighting off the likes of Bugatti, Bentley and Mercedes, into one beautifully resolved road car. By the 70’s, Alfa Romeo’s competition credentials were already beyond reproach. Two Formula 1 World Championships in the 1950’s, 11 Mille Miglia and 10 Targa Florio victories. Then came 1960’s Touring Car dominance. The newly unveiled 105-series Coupés prepared by Autodelta obliterated the ’66 ETCC season opener at Monza by locking out the top 7 positions, hauling in the championship, and emphatically repeating that feat in ‘67. What is also arguably Giorgetto Guigiaro’s formative masterpiece, and among the most popular designs of the 1960’s, the 105’s blueprint matured through three generations. The GTV 2000 being the last, most complete and most powerful of the breed. Fitted with the largest version of Alfa’s legendary all-alloy twin-cam four-cylinder engine, displacing 1,962cc, the DOHC unit features chain-driven camshafts, hemispherical combustion chambers with sodium-filled valves and Twin Weber 40DCOE carburettors (in European specification). Advanced engineering for the time, the 2000 produced an additional 15hp and 14Nm over the previous 1750, featuring a limited-slip differential as standard. Seemingly insignificant on paper, that small power improvement in a car that weighs just 1,030 kg’s makes the 2000 feel noticeably faster on road, with the broad powerband coming on earlier in the rev rage too. This Remarkable 2000 GTV: One of the finest extant, this remarkably original Australian delivered 1974 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTV 2000 offered here for the first time in many years was supplied new by Sydney based Alfa Romeo main agent, racing driver and avid Alfa enthusiast, Alec Mildren, September of 1974, NSW Registration HPG823. A concours winning example held in rarefied air that we’ve pursued for over a decade, retaining its numbers-matching engine, original factory configuration, and supported by a completely traceable ownership and service history, this car is a genuine rarity in a marque whose rich enthusiast culture has long favoured modification. Corresponding with the accompanying Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificate of Origin, this car was ordered in the striking combination of Prugna 525 over Cuoio Naturale trim. A highlight of the 105 series has always been a dazzling palette of colours, very of the era and exactly as it presents today. Boasting long-term ownership, this car was delivered new to Mr. Frank J. Walker, a refinery Engineer for Caltex, who dutifully kept it for 37 years. Frank and his wife drove the car daily, mostly between Turramurra and Ryde, with the occasional Thredbo ski trip, favouring the Alfa for its grip on mountain roads thanks to the LSD. We asked why they held onto this car for so long, Frank replied, "we couldn’t see any reason to sell it. It was a lovely car and should never have sold it." And, it was this car that converted Frank from MG’s to becoming an Alfaholic, owning only Alfa’s as daily drivers from that point on. He's currently equipped with a Stelvio and Giulietta. The car was then purchased from the Walkers by award winning Alfa Romeo restoration specialist, Michael Stillone and added to his phenomenal collection in 2011. Speaking with him recently, Michael remarked: "this car was probably the most original I’d ever owned". A poster found in the cars boot illustrates this period well: "A numbers matching car, it has been carefully refurbished - the engine has never been apart, and it has its original rust free floor, sills and chassis". Mechanically sound, Michael undertook a complete body and paint restoration. Original body and engine bay vinyl decals were carefully steamed off and re-applied after fresh, electronically matched Prugna 525 paintwork was applied. New/old stock parts such as badges and locks were sourced from specialist retailers Alfaholics, and Classic Alfa UK and the original steel wheels were beautifully refinished. The entire process was documented and is available on CD-Rom. In 2016, Michael sold the car to a private Alfa enthusiast who then employed Classic Alfa Romeo specialists Corse Automotive, Sydney to completely overhaul the original brakes, suspension and transmission and co-ordinate an exacting interior restoration, with zero expense spared. Over the next 18 months, he spent approximately $60,000 as all major and minor service items were attended to in exceptional detail. The result of 6 years painstaking refurbishment works delivered an unmatched, authentic GTV 2000 as enjoyable on the Concours lawn as it is blasting through tree lined roads. The car deservedly winning multiple awards, including 1st place in its class at the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club Concourso D’Eleganza 2017. Importantly, this car still retains all of its original GTV 2000 features, in superb condition. The signature slatted, open chrome grille with its larger "2000" shield badge flanked by quad Carello headlights, the dedicated instrument binnacle, larger rear light clusters, green C pillar Serpent, and the iconic 14-Inch steel wheels, sans hub caps fitted with new Pirelli radial style tyres. Even the original ‘Alec Mildren Pty Ltd’ dealer delivery vinyl decal, the original Sicursiv glass and Australian compliance plate are all accounted for. All tell-tale signs of a thoroughly cherished classic. The last service was completed April, 2025 with the car travelling only 1,500 miles since and today, this GTV 2000 presents in exceptional turn-key condition, ready to drive off the showroom floor. Supplied with a comprehensive history folio, including its original delivery books with service booklet recording delivery, warranty and servicing plus the original Alec Mildren bill of sale and corresponding NRMA insurance receipt. All remarkably rare and important inclusions. Award trophies, refurbishment and parts invoices and the Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificate of Origin complete the file, kept in a purpose made leather binder. Jeremy Clarkson once famously said, "You can’t be a true petrolhead until you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo". Few cars can amaze, entrance and greatly impress when new and again in later years but this very special GTV 2000 does exactly that. The car to cap off Alfa Romeo’s golden era and one we’ve always believed has been undervalued, poised for higher prices into the future, this exceptional 1974 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTV 2000 delivers pure driving enjoyment with unmatched originality and provenance. Now released and ready for its next fortunate custodian, this book-end GTV 2000 is a must own.
