After a year of searching in Australia and the US I discovered a very sound example in Los Angeles in late 2014. Subsequently I had the vehicle inspected and shipped to Adelaide. My goal was to find a 1972 OTS (Open Two Seater), unmolested (original in every way), with manual transmission. The ’72 year model is the Holy Grail of US “Federal Specification” cars as they incorporate several improvements over the ’71 release vehicles while retaining the high compression engines and not having the later Nordel type Enersorb rubber crash bumpers.
I am likely the third owner (it last changed owners in 1985) and had travelled 53,000 miles when I purchased it. I have added 7,000 pleasurable miles with the car proving to be reliable, well sorted, rust free, and original. It had a "closed door " respray (most likely in the mid 1980's) and has had a couple of minor touch ups since but has not been pulled apart and gutted to be restored. It is therefore tight and true to its original factory settings. This matching numbers example retains all of its original character including the original AM/FM push button radio, aerial, wheel trims, etc. When I purchased the car the spare wheel, secured in the boot, was fitted with the original unused Dunlop SP Sport tyre. The rim was still covered with casmoline preservative from the factory.
All perishable engine and drive train items have been replaced as well as the interior trim including the leather seats. The brakes have been refurbished, a factory reproduction stainless steel Bell twin exhaust is fitted, radiator replaced, water pump bearing and seal replaced (consequently it doesn't overheat) and the front and rear suspension and rear axle have been refurbished. The timing chain and tensioner as well as the clutch have also been replaced. I have a list (with receipts) of the work done which includes a recent professional engine tune-up by a local Jaguar specialist. The black vinyl soft-top and hood cover are in very good condition as is the beige tonneau cover (that has not been used). The jack and wheel brace are in the original bag.
The car will be sold with two sets of keys with original factory leather key fob, owners glovebox manual, original brochure, comprehensive documented service history (and receipts), workshop manual and spare parts book.
Why buy an American import? 80% of all E types were exported to the US with only 56 Open Two Seater (OTS) Series 3 E types exported by Jaguar of England to Australian dealers in the early 1970's, making original RHD Australian delivered cars very rare. Also, American cars purchased from dry climate states are usually rust free with low mileage, as this one is. The “Federal Specification” cars (those exported to US and Canada) have the extra bonus that they were factory optioned with;

• Remote adjustable exterior mirror
• Front number plate bracket
• Sportier differential ratio of 3.54:1 as opposed to 3.31:1
My car has steel wheels which were standard fitment (chrome wheels or spoked wheels were optional) for all V12 E types and marketed as superior to the spoke wheels as they were factory fitted with Dunlop SP Sport tubeless radial tyres. The spoke wheels required a less desirable tube to be fitted, as well as ongoing requirement for spoke and axle spline maintenance.
I am selling as I have purchased another classic car and don't have any more room in my garage. The current “club” registration is not transferable.
