As the e9 CSL has started to attract the attention it deserves from global collectors (still a bargain at half the price of the Porsche RS it beat for 9 years) it has become commercially attractive to flip cars after a budget restoration. This has led to a clutch of cars in the $350K-$400K range trading hands ($150K buy + $200K-$250K restoration).
As any experienced collector knows, there are restorations and there are restorations.
This example has undergone a no expense spared, world's best-practice restoration which is publically detailed on the authoritative e9 forum.
Meticulous attention to detail with the global support (and challenge) of the e9 forum led to a five year global best practice restoration and a car which is undeniably the best in the Southern Hemisphere if not the world.
The difference in outcome is clear from the moment you admire the photographs. You can be assured the car enjoys true original parts and restoration to original standards and is, in select and measured ways, better than factory (e.g. hand fashioned heat shielding around the exhaust and Bluetooth addition to its original radio).
The car is one of an estimated 280 remaining from the original 500 City Pack Cars and has super rare factory original air-conditioning with a modern compressor which makes it the ideal year-round Australian drivable classic.
Not suprisingly, on its only showing, the Car won the combined judges award (Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, VW, Audi) at the Australian German Auto Fest (against over 600 other classics) along with the biennial BMW concours d'Elegance Award for best car.
This car has travelled only ~1,500 KMs since its full restoration and is started monthly and driven safe distances on non-wet roads to keep everything in perfect concours running order.
As an example of the no-expense spared approach, the engine was flown to Korman's in the US for its rebuild as there were no Australian mechanics who had rebuilt more than 1 CSL engine and Kormans have a global reputation for building and preparing e9 engines, including those of the US e9 CSL racing team. In a similar vein, the car is shod with the rather expensive Michelin XWX's for a truly authentic look and feel.
This car is not for the average collector.
If you have spent your life working hard, want the very very best, and never want to look at your prized car and think that even one aspect of it might not be the best it can be, then this car might be the significant purchase in your life that brings the most satisfaction.
Perfect for the best local and regional private and museum collections, a drawcard for BMW Dealerships, or an impulse buy to recognise a major recent success or personal milestone, you can be assured of continued tax free capital growth and the total absence of buyers remorse, as you will posses the very best.
The car enjoys full documentation, BMW certficate of authentication, workshop manuals, custom interior car cover, and has recently been serviced.
Confidential inspections in Sydney by appointment only.
Update: Consistent with the car's unique standing it has been displayed just twice this year:
1. NSW Government House: See enclosed photograps
2. Col Crawford BMW Club Cars and Coffee Event (See enclosed thank you letter reporting BMW's assesment of the car's remarkable condition)
