Since the day it was unveiled to an astonished Geneva audience in 1961, the E-type Jaguar has captivated not just car enthusiasts but also the public, with its incredibly graceful lines and stories of 150mph performance. The E-type was truly ahead of its time and almost immediately became a byword for glamour, speed and style.
This particular car was imported to Australia and first sold new in 1971 by Larke Hoskins, Sydney for $8619.17 (see original receipt in photos).
The car exchanged owners several times and in 1997 came into the ownership of long-term Jaguar Australia club member Brian H, a mechanical engineer whose XK and XKE rebuilds are legendary in Jaguar circles. Brian undertook a full bare metal rebuild, and, not satisfied with the previous 1978 engine rebuild, undertook a nut and bolt rebuild of both the motor and the gearbox. Such is Brian’s attention to detail that even the jack was subject to a bare metal respray. Shortly after the rebuild Brian drove the car around Australia (see photos), he tested his mechanical prowess with a 130mph+ track day and then leased the car to the producers of TV drama ‘A Complicated Life’, where it was featured in the show Australian Story: A Complicated Life:... - YouTube (watch the clip to the end). During Brian's ownership the car also won numerous top show awards (see photos).
Brian sold the car in 2014 with 89,559 miles on the clock, in 2019, after largely being in storage, it was sold to the Gosford car museum with 90,500 miles, it remained on airconditioned display there until 2023 when I bought it with 90,680 miles.
Given the length of its lay-up I immediately took the car to Greg Parsons (Dr Jag) for a full health check and service, the car then went to Tony Arditto (Sydney Jaguar engineer) to have the rear drive splines replaced.
Unfortunately, during its stay at the Gosford Car Museum all the accessories were ‘lost’, I have purchased a replacement tool kit from Jaguar UK, remarkably they still hold original parts. I also replaced the original wheel spinners with the more authentic ‘winged’ spinners (the originals will come with the car). I also procured an original maintenance and service booklet from the USA which contains electrical system and service data posters, subsequently the car is now equipped as it would have been when new. The car also has a Bluetooth retro-fit radio and is wired for hands-free.
I can include the reg plate XKE71 if we can agree on price.
To summarise, the car is in pristine condition, I’ve been told by suitably experienced club members that it would be considered 95% concourse ready. As well as the accessories mentioned it comes with a Jaguar Heritage certificate which authenticates matching numbers, I also have a folder of paperwork that identifies all the previous owners - it would be difficult to find a better more complete example of this marque.
For my part, E-type ownership was a childhood bucket-list dream, the reason I’m selling is because I plan to purchase a series I and, unfortunately, my garage isn’t big enough for two E-types.
