THE STORY Based on the mid-size Buick GS platform, Buick continued its performance legacy with the 1971 GS Stage 1, refining its formula as new emissions regulations began reshaping the muscle car era. At its core was the Buick 455ci V8, officially rated at 360 horsepower and an imposing 510lb-ft of torque. Featuring upgraded internals and cold air induction, it delivered performance that exceeded its conservative factory figures, with period tests showing low 13-second quarter-mile capability. Buyers could opt for a 4-speed manual or Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic, paired with performance suspension, heavy-duty cooling, and standard 3.42 gearing. Power front disc brakes ensured it could match its straight-line speed with stopping ability. True to Buick form, the Stage 1 combined serious performance with tough muscle car styling and a comfortable well-appointed interior, making it one of the most understated yet capable muscle cars of its time. THE CAR Rarely seen in Australia, this 1971 Buick GS ("Gran Sport") Stage 1is a very well documented car in fantastic condition. The original dealer invoice states this vehicle was sold by East Side Buick in Flint, Michigan with the Stage 1 option - high performance 455 CI modified V8 engine with a heavy-duty radiator, heavy-duty energizer (battery), and a positive traction performance axle. Presented in Regal Black, this is a highly optioned car from factory including power front disc brakes, power steering, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, custom vinyl roof and custom trim including vinyl notchback seats. A full restoration was completed in 2009 including paint, new vinyl top, new chrome and stainless-steel trim all of which are still in excellent condition. This car has a rebuilt number's matching engine with performance cam and forged pistons. The correct dual-snorkel air cleaner with functional bonnet air intake sits on top of a 4-barrel Rochester 780 carburettor. It has its original GM Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed automatic transmission and posi-traction rear end. There's a dual exhaust and factory handling option which includes large front and rear sway bars and axle connectors. This tough Stage 1 sits on factory style GS Rally wheels (10? in the rear) that are clad in Galaxy T/A white letter tyres and original spare wheel and tyre from 1971 sit in the trunk. Apart from the original dealer invoice, a large provenance file includes the car's Protect-O-Plate, warranty booklet, copies of various registrations and photos of the restoration. The front bench seat is being reupholstered as part of the sale. A rare opportunity to own a tough, well documented piece of American muscle car history.
