1R13776, A 1970 series 2 E- Type Jaguar convertible, was purchased new by Thomas A. Poulter in New Orleans. He then moved to Florida, and then to California, taking the car with him and remaining it's only owner up until 2009, when it was purchased for a Victorian collector by well known South Australian importer, The Car Connection. The car was stored in Victoria, requiring restoration, until 2016 when I purchased it. The car was very complete, undamaged except for some parking scrapes, and rust free, and was an ideal example for restoration ,having travelled only 98,416 miles since new. All numbers match except the engine, which was replaced at some time in California with a correct 1970 E Type motor,
number 7R 10414-9.
The car was stripped to a bare shell, soda blasted to remove paint and mounted on a rotisserie where it underwent a professional preparation and repaint to an exceptionally high standard. The car is finished in DeBeers 2 pack giving high gloss and a very durable finish. Chromework was re-plated to a high standard, and the car overall is of show quality.
During this time the mechanical components were all fully rebuilt, repaired or replaced with new as required. The engine, for example, was re-sleeved with new cylinder liners and new pistons, bearings, timing chains, valves, guides, valve seats, etc were fitted. Similarly, the gearbox, differential, suspensions, brakes and electrical components were either rebuilt or replaced. Finish underneath the car is also exceptional. Receipts and photos can verify the work completed.
The car was restored in the original colour combination of Pale Primrose paintwork with a black interior and hood. A new hood cover and the car's original tonneau cover which is still in very good condition, accompany the car.
As 13776 was a US car, it was converted to right hand drive and the twin Stromberg carburetters were replaced with triple 2 inch SU's which were the factory specification for right hand drive cars. The differential was also rebuilt using a new crown wheel and pinion with the higher 3.08 ratio giving a more relaxed cruising RPM. An aluminium flywheel was also fitted giving better acceleration. Electronic ignition, in the form of a selective 123 Ignition distributor, gives excellent starting and performance.
The interior was re-trimmed and seats were re-upholstered using premium Connelly Autolux black leather. The car's original jack, a full Jaguar toolkit and owners handbook, sales brochure and workshop manual are included.
This is an opportunity to purchase a stunning example of the iconic E-Type roadster at a very competitive price, well below typical purchase and restoration costs.
The car has travelled only 2,457 kms since being registered in 2019 following the restoration.
1R13776 is a delight to drive, with independent rear suspension and precise handling. In its day, it was highly regarded as prestigious sports car and it still commands considerable attention. It is being sold as I rarely use it, and own another classic Jaguar. Any inspection is welcome and I can provide comprehensive photos of the restoration upon request.
