**fully reconditioned engine with less than 200kms**
Offered for sale is a rare and mechanically superb 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL. While many Pagodas are prized as static "garage queens," this particular car was built for the road. It left the factory in what many consider the ultimate enthusiast specification: The ZF 5-Speed Manual.
Mechanical Pedigree.
The heart of this car is its rare, factory-fitted ZF 5-speed transmission—an incredibly scarce option (only ~882 produced across all W113 models) that completely transforms the driving experience compared to the standard 4-speed or automatic.
• Engine: Just underwent a comprehensive $25,000 reconditioning by the renowned John at MB Classic Star in Greenacre. It is strong, healthy, and ready for its next chapter.
• Maintenance: A+ mechanically
• Electronics: Lights, indicators, and brakes are all in good working order. It retains its original, functioning Becker radio/cassette player.
History & Specification
This car was originally delivered to Germany as a Left-Hand Drive model in the iconic Silver Grey Metallic (DB180G) over a Light Natural interior. It was later imported to Australia and converted to Right-Hand Drive (believed to be during long-term ownership in Canberra). At that time, the color was changed to its current Forest Green. It has a rich local history and has been a regular participant in various Mercedes-Benz club events over the decades.
Condition
This is an honest, "driver-level" classic. It presents beautifully from a distance, but in the interest of full transparency for interstate or serious buyers…
• Paint: The 25-year-old respray is showing its age. There are signs of bubbling, most notably on the boot lid.
• Conversion: The RHD conversion is functional, although some interior trim pieces do not line up with factory perfection.
• Electrical: The wipers and hazard lights are currently non-functional. These haven't hindered my enjoyment of the car on clear days, but I can have these investigated for a serious buyer.

This is a rare opportunity to own an extremely rare 5 speed ZF Pagoda with a fresh, documented engine rebuild. It is the perfect candidate for someone who wants a classic they can actually use and enjoy immediately, or a world-class basis for a cosmetic restoration back to its original Silver. Examples of Silver ZF pagodas have been seen to regularly sell for 200K+ EUR via Sothebys.
I also hold copies of a the original delivery and specification documentation plus a folder with extensive receipts and documents.
The car is presently on club plates.
