I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START AND I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M DOING THIS. BUT I'VE HAD THE OLD GIRL FOR 20 YEARS NOW AND IT'S TIME FOR HER TO FIND A GOOD, NEW HOME. SHE LOOKS AND GOES A LOT BETTER THAN WHEN WE FIRST MET, THE TOW DRIVER DELIVERED HER HOME FROM THE WHARF AND SHE SAT COCK-EYED ON MY DRIVEWAY WITH A FLAT TYRE AND FADED PAINT WORK. MY FIRST WORRY WAS... HAD SOME BUGGER STOLEN THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL AND GEAR SHIFT KNOB, NO, THEY WERE THERE ALONG WITH A SMASHED DASH, SEIZED ENGINE, TATTERED CARPET AND A WHOLE LOT OF OTHER THINGS THAT WOULD END UP COSTING A SMALL FORTUNE TO MAKE GOOD.
SO YES FULL ENGINE REBUILD, BARE METAL PAINT, NEW CARPET, NEW DASH BINNACLE, NEW DOOR PANELS, REDO FRONT SEATS, (REARS STILL ORIGINAL) RESTORE AND CALIBRATE ALL INSTRUMENTS, NEW ROOF LINING AND ON IT WENT AND ALONG THE WAY WE DISCOVERED THAT THIS WEST COAST USA CAR HAD BEEN RALLIED AND SPENT SOME TIME IN OREGON. THE FULL STRIP DOWN ALSO REVEALED IT HAD NEVER HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE CAR STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL DUNLOP RACING WHEELS, OWNERS MANUAL, STEERING WHEEL AND SO MUCH MORE. AND IN 20 YEARS IT'S DONE JUST OVER 3000 K'S AND I CAN HEAR THE PURISTS SHOUTING "THEY ARE MEANT TO BE DRIVEN"
APART FROM THE RALLY ACTIVITY NOTHING IS KNOWN OF THE FIRST 10-15 YEARS OF MR CHAPMAN'S CREATION, IT'S LAST US REGO WAS IN OREGON IN 1980 THEN IT SAT IN A SHED FOR THE BEST PART OF 20 YEARS THEN THIS AUSTRALIAN GUY (ME) COMES ALONG AND BUYS IT SIGHT UNSEEN ON EBAY...AND NOW HERE SHE IS ON CAR CALES
Engine is the one that came with the car I bought and due to the originality and state the car was in at purchase I would expect it to be the original motor. The FIRST rebuild was done by the very well respected Micheal Vinneron (AKA The Frog) of Highlands Race and Classic who assisted in the reassembly of most of the cars mechanics, several years later a valve seat cracked with sections finding their way into the No 1 pot hence the SECOND rebuild was done by Peter Larner Engines in Victoria...receipts I have by the bucket load, $60,000 plus easy... happy to answer any more questions. THE CAR ALSO HAS THE CENTER CONSOLE INDIANAPOLIS WINNER BADGE ( A LOTUS INDY CAR WON THE 1965 500) AND THE ORIGINAL STEERING WHEELS SHOWS THE LOTUS LOGO IN BLACK AND SILVER NOT GREEN AND YELLOW BUT THE BLACK BADGE WAS NOT INTRODUCED TILL 1968 AS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR JIM CLARK
