Australian delivered 1966 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTC - 1 of 99 RHD example
Carrozzeria Touring’s modification of Bertone’s masterpiece.
For enthusiasts and collectors of European sports cars, Alfa Romeo’s 105-series Giulia Sprint GT has long been considered one of the most beautifully shaped coupes ever created. Its rounded, delicate form renders it one of those rare cars that is perfect from every angle. Penned by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro while he was employed at Carrozzeria Bertone in the early 1960s, the GT’s distinctive design made it a sales success for the Milan-based manufacturer.
One year after the Giulia Sprint GT was introduced, a convertible version called the GTC—C for cabriolet—was offered for the 1964 model year. With Bertone’s production at maximum capacity, the task to produce the GTC was given to Carrozzeria Touring. Produced 1964-1966, a grand total of 998 GTCs had been made: 106 in 1964, 600 in 1965, and 292 in 1966. A total of only 99 were built with right-hand drive.
Other than a slightly modified structure to help stiffen the roofless body and lengthen bootlid, the GTC is identical to the GT. Like most Alfas of this era, power was provided by the all-aluminum twin overhead-cam four-cylinder engine displacing 1,570cc that developed 106 horsepower at 6,000 rpm via a pair of DCOE Weber carburetors. An all-synchromesh five-speed gearbox and a 4.55-geared final drive completed its driveline makeup.
Its interior was well-appointed and spacious, with individual bucket seats that have good back support while not being too confining. The three-spoke steering wheel and long-throw shifter add greatly to the car’s sporting character, and are backed by six instruments in four gauges; the speedometer tops out at an impressive 140 mph while the tacho’s redline, which covers a range from 6,400 to 8,000 rpm, confirms the engine’s ability to rev.

Perhaps its greatest attribute is the way it drives. The car feels tight, light and throttle response is instant with well-balanced pedal feel from the accelerator, clutch, and brake, as if they were all cut from the same piece. The steering is precise, gearshift sweet while the exhaust note from the iconic 1600 free revving twin cam inline four is nothing short of symphonic.
