This Big Healey, my fourth since 1975, came into my hands in 2005. This final series (MK III) car was restored that year by Steve Pike of Marsh Restorations and looked after since then by the Healey Factory in Mitcham, VIC. This car sports the MK III ‘one-touch” soft-top, burl walnut dash, 148bhp 2,912cc six-cylinder engine and later chassis. It is also fitted with its original four-speed manual gearbox and Laycock de Normanville overdrive.
Finished in Colorado Red over black coves highlighted by 72-spoke chrome wire wheels and brilliant chromework, the interior is done in classic black leather with a Moto-Lita steering wheel. The top is finished in black Mercedes cloth by Garry Blackman, complemented by a matching hood cover and a full tonneau cover that covers the entire cockpit.
Improvements for safety, comfort, and reliability include:
• Reconditioned cylinder head for unleaded fuel
• Rebuilt front-end with competition sway bar
• Koni suspension conversion
• Alloy radiator
• Electronic ignition.
A complete record of all work since 2005 is available.
This BJ8 is a reliable, comfortable tourer, while still delivering great period performance.
