First time offered to the public in over 40 years, just completed an 18-month, 1000 hour plus, meticulous, no expense spared restoration. Last of series Silver Cloud 1 “Continental Spec” car in museum condition. Only a handful of these late cars exist having being built alongside the Silver Cloud 2 and sharing many of the updated features such as cooling, lubrication, air filtration, drivetrain, and electrical upgrades.
Like most of these cars they were delivered to the most prominent and successful members of our society at the time, this car is no exception having been ordered by Gladys Penfold Hyland whilst on a trip to Europe in early 1959 in the bespoke non metallic color of Belco Grey, her signature color that she often wore formally. SMH227 was delivered via York Motors Sydney to her home “Toft Monks” in Elizabeth Bay in July 1959 and became a frequent site in the 1960's being driven around the inner Eastern Suburbs of Sydney by Bevan, her chauffeur, dressed in a matching grey suit and cap.
Used in conjunction with other Rolls Royce’s including a Phantom ordered in the same color, it was kept when all others were sold or donated, as was the case with the Phantom that ended up becoming the Governors ceremonial car. After her death in 1974 at 88 the car was garaged on the Penfold Estate for several years before being sold to Sydney in 1979 showing just 36,099 documented miles.
The new owner lavished it with care and attention replacing the exhaust and perishable seals that had succumbed to its years of storage and little use, selling it in 1984 to its last owner in Melbourne showing 40,445miles. Upon its arrival in Victoria it was treated to a comprehensive and rather expensive checkover at Kellow Fawkner in South Yarra.
SMH227 remained with this owner who moved to Toowoomba in the 90's where it was kept garaged and used occasionally for wedding and events over the next 40 years, it was taken out on regular occasions for a short run and for annual servicing at NBS Services who know the car well. In 2000 the car underwent a high quality glasurit repaint (its first), full wood repolish and extensive recommissioning of brakes and replacement of perished rubbers throughout. It left Toowoomba in July 2023 showing a genuine 50,092miles and was driven back to Melbourne without incident on a steady 120kph.
Over the last 2 years this car has undergone a thorough engine out, chassis up restoration to bring an already fantastic car to concourse condition, it retains all its original features and where needed new parts were purchased from the UK. No detail has been overlooked from the refurbishment of the original heating system to the new leather spring gaiters, this car looks just as good underneath as it does on top, something most Rolls & Bentleys from this period can't achieve. Photos of restoration process are included in the sale.
The car has been shown once since its completion and won its class along with the presidents trophy at the Victorian concours délegance in November 2025.
SMH 227 would be one of the best, fully documented, low mileage, late Cloud 1's in the world today and it comes with its original glove box hand book, all its original tools, delivery documents, detailed handwritten service history from York Motors and even the delivery cards for the radio and dash operation that were hanging on the knobs when delivered.
Now showing just 53,597 miles (86,256km's) and would suit the most discerning Rolls Royce collector or enthusiast that want's a turn key car, the last of the 6cyl - 8.1comp twin carburetor cars were indeed the best Rolls Royce motors ever made and anyone considering purchasing would already know that.
Will trade something interesting
