THE STORY
The Austin Healey 100/6 was produced in a 2+2 format (BN4) from 1956 to 1959. In 1958 a 2-seater roadster (BN6) added to the lineup. The 100/6 replaced the previous model, the 100 which had a 4-cylinder engine.
The new 100/6 was powered by a ?C Series? 2.6 litre straight 6-cylinder engine that put out 117 horsepower. Apart from the substantial engine upgrade, additional improvements included two small rear seats being added, a fixed windshield and a wider radiator grille that was mounted in a slightly lower location compared to its predecessor.
Where the 100 was clearly pitched at the sports car market, the 100/6 offered additional comfort with longer drives in mind whilst retaining the 100?s sporting character.
Donald Healey, the marque?s creator, was an avid race fan and the cars were immediately put to use on the track ? notably in the 12 hours of Sebring races.
THE CAR
A fantastic example of the beautiful BN4 six-cylinder Austin Healey.
This is believed to be an Australia delivered car. The original owner is unknown but the car was sold by a dealer in Millicent SA (Alan A Smith Ltd) to a Mr J G Atwell who entered into a hire purchase agreement to buy it in August 1966.
During this second period of long-term ownership, restoration work was undertaken including a new interior, new tonneau cover, new hood and aluminium side curtains. The black tonneau cover has a central zipper allowing it to still be driven when fitted. Many of the parts were purchased from Moss Europe Ltd in the UK.
Finished in Austin Old English White/Ivory and ceramic coated, the car is set off with black vinyl seats with white piping. The carpet is near new and the door cards and dash present beautifully. The underside of the car has been sealed to prevent corrosion.
The chrome, grill, badges, gauges and wire wheels are in excellent condition. The car retains its original 100/6 banjo steering wheel. Tools including the lead hammer for use with the knock off wheels are in the boot as is a correct full wire spare wheel.
The engine bay is tidy and still has many of its original tags intact. The engine revs freely and has excellent power and a willing exhaust note. The car handles well and is nimble through the corners.
The 4-speed manual gearbox is complete with a push-button overdrive.
The current owner has fitted new spark plug leads and plugs, points and a wind-wing set. In June 2024, the car?s overdrive was serviced. A new brake master cylinder has been installed during the last two years.
Provenance includes insurance documents from the 1970?s and 80?s, the original hire purchase agreement from 1966, an original operations manual that covers the engine and various receipts for work done and parts purchased. In addition the registration plates are the same that originally came with the car.
There is an extensive list of parts that accompany the sale including; a spin-on oil filter kit, new boot hinge gaskets, 2 x engine side plate gaskets, 3 x starter motors, 3 x generators, water pump, 2 x original air cleaners, 4 x spline hubs, original coil and bracket, 2 x front valances, 4 x bumper bars including brackets, 4 x overriders, boot level and lock and 2 x boot hinges.
A great car that is fun to drive.
