Georgeous 1937 SA Tourer. One of 23 MG SA’s imported into Australia from new. Completed 21 June 1937 and arrived in Australia 29 October that year. Chassis No. 1885. Engine No QPHG 2147. Six cylinder (2,322cc) gentleman’s luxury tourer. MG’s hopes to compete with Jaguar and Bentley in the luxury long distance touring market were quickly frustrated by the onset of WWII in 1939, so few of these beautiful six cylinder cars exist.
This is essentially a new car, having travelled only a few thousand kms since the rebuild. It was was subject to a complete nut and bolt, bare metal restoration New steel body by Robinson Brothers Carrozzeria in the style of a Charlesworth tourer. Fully rebuilt engine meticulously prepared and tuned by renowned specialist vintage and veteran restorer, Up the Creek Workshop (Castlemaine ). New English leather upholstery. Four speed gearbox with synchro on second. All new bright work.
The car was built for Harry Hickling as a replacement for his SA sedan in which he has travelled something like 70,000 kms of long distance touring (including twice on the Peking to Paris).
Two non-standard features are dual fuel tanks (with separate SU pumps) to facilitate long distant touring, and a discretely located Craig Davies electric water pump to ensure easy management of engine temperature even in slow traffic and hot weather.
The car starts ‘on the button’ in any weather condition and drives very well indeed. It has no difficulty keeping up with modern traffic.
Any inspection welcome. John Crighton 0418-232-093.
