A beautiful Austin 7 sports special built in the early 2000’s using parts sourced over a lifetime of collecting and developing Austin 7’s.
With significant development, this beautiful car can easily sit between 90-100 kph whilst offering a much more stable ride and handling dynamics when compared to a standard short chassis Austin 7. The Austin is perfect for all types of sporting motoring, from club rallies to hillclimbs and regularity circuit events. With the extra leg room of the long chassis, the Austin is a great all round car for an enthusiast.
Based on a Austin Seven Ruby running gear, the chassis has been upgraded with a ‘bowed’ ulster axle and flattened leaf spring, reinforced chassis and fitted with twin friction shock absorbers on the front axle and hydraulic shock absorbers on the rear axle. All mechanical work was completed by Up the Creek Workshop.
The brakes have been converted to hydraulic action using Morris Minor 7-inch leading shoe brakes with cast iron Austin Brake drums. They are superb when compared to standard brakes.
The two-seater body has been fabricated from a tubular steel frame built by Bernie Jacobson and panelled in Aluminium by Occa Tingay. It is painted in 2K Alfa Romeo red with black cycle guards. Fitted with a period folding windscreen with electric wipers.
Grant White has trimmed the interior in hard wearing vinyl, including the bucket seats and a tonneau with side covers. The hood easily folds out to allow for practical motoring year round.
The dashboard has been fitted with an Ruby instrument panel, including a Smith’s combination Oil Pressure and Temperature Gauge, Petrol Gauge, Speedometer, Ammeter, Electric Rev Counter and clock.
The engine has been built by Grant Cowie of Up The Creek Workshop to a very high specification:
- Pressure fed crankshaft,
- Renault Conrods and pistons running shell bearings,
- Rebuilt oil pump with external filter,
- Sports camshaft operating oversize new inlet valves,
- High compressor head,
- New large capacity aluminium sump,
- Lightened flywheel
- SU Carburettor with 4 branch exhaust
- An electric fan is fitted to make the car practical in suburban traffic along with a re-cored radiator.
The 4-speed gearbox has been rebuilt with close ratios by John Needham for fast road use and fitted with a remote control. The gearbox output drives a new hardy spicer tail shaft and a pulley for a 12V alternator.
Beautifully wired by Ken Smith, the car has discreetly fitted indicators and horn for road use.
Recent maintenance includes:
- Service and carburettor tune
- Rebuilt brakes - new brake shoes/linings and wheel cylinders fitted
- 5x new tyres fitted to freshly powder coated wheels.
