Price reduction: Sometimes it’s the story behind the car. The first owner of this 1927 Rolls-Royce Cabriolet de Ville car was immensely wealthy and by blood and marriage, related to some of the most influential US families. He owned businesses including the American Totalisator Company (now Amtote) that processes all the betting tickets used on US racecourses; maintained family operations in shipping and trading including the biggest US grain merchant business; and married into even more money by taking the hand of Fernanda Wanamaker, daughter of the Wanamaker department store empire. Ector Orr Munn (1891-1993) ordered this car’s chassis from Rolls-Royce in April 1927, with Barker building the coachwork and delivering the car and its driver to France for a European holiday for the Munn family. It was then transported back to Munn’s address at 17 East 90th Street in New York and kept by him in New York and Palm Beach until 1955 when it was sold. A later buyer was real estate entrepreneur John Allen Talbot III of Middleburg, Virginia who owned it from 1965 until gifting it to his daughter Anne T. Fields. It returned to Mr Talbot’s ownership in 1983 and was kept until 1993 when it went to Welsh classic car specialist The Real Car Company until sold in 2005 to a Belfast businessman. It was sold to the current owner in 2022 who has subsequently purchased another period Rolls-Royce. Of interest is that this 1927 Cabriolet deVille is termed a ‘three-position’ model so can be driven as a full open tourer, with wind-up windows helping protect the occupants; with the rear roof in place; and then with the driver’s roof to make it fully weatherproof. It was ordered at a cost of ￡1100 (plus about ￡1800 for the coachwork). Owner EO Munn optioned it with with front brakes (very expensive at ￡85); nickel plated fittings, including a ‘diver’s helmet’ rear stop light; and ￡9 for the silver-coated radiator shutters. It will be sold complete with memorabilia associated with the car and its first owner. The Spirit of Ecstasy atop the radiator is in original condition and clearly shows the ‘Rolls-Royce’ print detail on the boss. The car is in very good condition having recently had a complete engine overhaul (documented). The aluminium body has no corrosion and the paintwork is in good condition, as is the condition of the upholstery and headliner, including new leather fitted to the front seats and new carpet in the front section. A video is available showing the roof assembly. The doors and wind-up windows (including the partition glass with its conversation porthole) are in very good condition. Included is a trunk on the rear bumper. The car is on a concessional licence but can be upgraded to a full road licence. The 3.1-litre inline-six engine starts almost immediately, hot or cold and is very smooth and near silent. The car is very drivable with simple and easily operated controls and has features such as indicators to make it fit comfortably with today’s traffic. It has five brand-new tyres fitted this year.
